ABOUT THIS WIDGET

The Astryke Sound Board is a free embeddable sound board widget. Sixteen tappable pads in a four-by-four grid. Four theme presets (Drums, Sci-Fi, Comedy, Lo-Fi) each swap all sixteen sounds at once. Every sound is synthesized in your browser via the Web Audio API. No audio files to download, no licensing fuss, no copyright trip-wires. Drop into any blog post, classroom slide, livestream panel, or HTML file. Or download it as a single self-contained HTML file that plays offline forever.

Why use this widget instead of the alternatives

  • Free. Always. No paywalls, no upgrade nags, no time-limited trials.
  • No ads on the widget itself. Most online soundboards are buried in display ads and autoplay video.
  • No tracking on the embedded version. The widget loads no Google Analytics, no Cloudflare Web Analytics, no third-party scripts inside the iframe.
  • No copyright headaches. Every sound is synthesized at runtime via Web Audio oscillators and noise generators. Nothing is sampled, nothing is licensed, nothing can take you down.
  • Mobile-friendly. The 480 by 520 canvas scales responsively, taps work without delay, and pads are sized for comfortable thumb hits.
  • Offline-capable. Download a single self-contained HTML file under 25 KB that plays without an internet connection.
  • Instant playback. No audio file fetching, no decoding, no buffer warmup. Every tap is gapless.
  • No accounts, no signup, no login. Anywhere. Ever.

What makes it great

  • Sixteen pads in a four-by-four grid. Each pad has a short label so you remember what it does at a glance.
  • Four theme presets. Drums (kick, snare, hat, clap, tom, ride, 808, cowbell, more). Sci-Fi (laser, phaser, scan, glitch, zap, whoosh, hum, charge). Comedy (boing, honk, sad trombone, drum roll, cymbal, boo). Lo-Fi (warm kick, bass notes, sine keys, vinyl crackle, tape stop, chime).
  • Tap a pad to play. The pad flashes the theme's accent color for a quarter second so you see what fired.
  • URL-param customization. Embed ?theme=scifi and every visitor opens to Sci-Fi mode. Sticky across refreshes without cookies or localStorage.
  • Bake-on-download. Configure on astryke.com, click Download as HTML, get a file with your chosen theme baked in.
  • All sounds Web Audio synthesized. Oscillators (sine, square, triangle, sawtooth), pitch sweeps, and bandpass-filtered noise. Roughly sixty-four distinct sound designs across the four presets.
  • Mute toggle in the header for embed environments where audio would be disruptive.
  • Custom right-click menu instead of the browser default, branded with a link back to Astryke.
  • Hi-DPI canvas rendering for sharp visuals on Retina and 4K displays.

Where this works well

Livestream and Twitch panels. Drop it into a panel as a chat-driven novelty. Viewers cannot trigger sounds remotely, but you can while streaming. Stays free of licensed-sample takedown risk.

Classroom rhythm and probability lessons. Tap drum pads in patterns to teach beat and meter. Or tap randomly to demonstrate that the timing of perceived rhythm depends on grouping. Works offline on locked-down school computers.

Game dev blogs on Web Audio synthesis. Embed alongside a writeup on oscillators, envelopes, and noise filtering. Readers see the building blocks of game sound effects working live.

UX prototyping and meeting feedback. Use as a poor person's reaction soundboard during demos. Tap APPLAUSE, BOO, BOING, or DRUM ROLL to react in real time without a Zoom-soundboard subscription.

Kid-friendly browser play. Sixteen pads, four themes, instant feedback. No login. No subscription. No ads. Pass the tablet, let them tap.

Worldbuilding and tabletop ambience starters. Sci-Fi preset for spaceship bridges, Comedy preset for tavern chaos, Lo-Fi preset for moody scenes. Mix with a wheel-of-names spin or a dice roll for layered table feel.

Game jams and prototype scaffolding. Steal the synth code from the standalone HTML for your own jam game. Each sound is five lines of readable JavaScript.

Theme presets in detail

Drums. Sixteen percussion sounds: KICK, SNARE, HAT (closed), OPEN HAT, CLAP, TOM LO, TOM HI, RIDE, CRASH, COWBELL, RIM, 808, SHAKER, CLICK, BONGO, TAMB. Bandpass-filtered noise drives the snares, hats, and shakers; pitch-swept sines drive the tonal toms and kicks; squares drive the cowbell and rim. Tap a few pads in a row to make a beat.

Sci-Fi. Sixteen synthesized sci-fi sounds: LASER, PHASER, BEEP, BOOP, SCAN, GLITCH, ZAP, WHOOSH, HUM, BLEEP UP, BLOOP DN, SQUELCH, CHARGE, POWER, STATIC, UI BLIP. Heavy use of pitch sweeps (square and sawtooth for laser/zap edges, sine for smooth bleeps) plus filtered noise for whooshes and static.

Comedy. Sixteen comedic sounds: BOING, HONK, POP, WHISTLE, SLIDE DN, SLIDE UP, BOO, CHEER, SAD TRMB, DRUM RLL, CYMBAL, SQUEAK, DOINK, BUBBLE, TWANG, DOOR. The classic four-note sad trombone, the drum-roll cymbal payoff, the boing for slapstick. Combine for full skit-reaction beats.

Lo-Fi. Sixteen muted, warm sounds: KICK (warm), SNARE (low-passed), HAT, BASS C, BASS E, BASS G, KEY C5, KEY E5, KEY G5, CHIME, PAD, VINYL, TAPE STP, SHAKER (soft), RIM, BOWL. Triangle waves for bass and pad warmth, sines for keys and chimes, slow filtered noise for vinyl crackle and the tape-stop sweep.

URL params. Theme persists via URL query parameter. ?theme=scifi opens to Sci-Fi mode; theme keys are drums (default), scifi, comedy, lofi. The Copy Embed Code button generates the right URL automatically. URL params survive page refresh, work in iframes, and require no cookies or localStorage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sound Board free to use commercially?

Yes. Use it in client work, in a paid course, in monetized blog posts, in product demos. No attribution required. The watermark at the bottom right links back to Astryke regardless, which is how the project funds future widgets.

Are the sounds licensed samples?

No. Every sound is synthesized at runtime via Web Audio oscillators and filtered noise. Nothing is sampled, nothing is licensed, no copyright claim is possible. The synth code itself is open for you to read and modify in the standalone download.

Can I upload my own sounds?

No. By design, Astryke widgets do not accept file uploads (would require moderation, storage, and copyright handling). The trade-off is that every sound is synthesized fresh and ships as plain code you can fork. If you need custom-sample playback, copy the standalone HTML and replace the synth functions with your own audio buffers.

Will visitors to my embedded board be tracked by Astryke?

No. The iframe-embedded version does not load Google Analytics, Cloudflare Web Analytics, or any third-party tracking. Visitors to astryke.com itself are measured, but visitors who only interact with embedded widgets on your site are not.

Does this work on phones and tablets?

Yes. The canvas scales responsively, touch is supported without delay, and the pads are sized for comfortable thumb hits on phone screens.

Can I play multiple pads at the same time?

Yes. Each tap fires an independent Web Audio voice. Tap as fast as you can; sounds layer cleanly.

Will my theme choice persist if visitors refresh the page?

Yes, because the theme lives in the iframe URL. Every refresh sees the same theme. No cookies, no localStorage.

Can I edit the source code of the downloaded HTML file?

Yes. The standalone HTML is plain readable JavaScript. Open it in a text editor, change colors, tweak any pad's frequency, duration, or filter, swap fonts, add your own sounds. No build step required.

Will this slow down my page?

No noticeable impact. The iframe lazy-loads (loading=lazy), the standalone is around 22 KB, and there are no third-party scripts or audio file downloads. Lighthouse scores stay clean.

Can I run multiple sound boards on the same page?

Yes. Each iframe is independent and has its own Web Audio context. Configure each one with a different theme if you want a Drums + Sci-Fi pair side by side.
