Audio Forge is a free online tool that does two related jobs. Extract pulls the audio track out of a video as a 192 kbps MP3 or a 16-bit WAV. Mute re-encodes the video without its audio track, so you can drop in new music or clear a copyrighted soundtrack. Drag a file in, pick a mode, click the button.
Both jobs already work in the browser. Most free pages on the open web ask you to upload a video to a server, sit through an ad countdown, and accept a watermarked filename. None of that is needed for either job.

- MP3 encoding is single-threaded in your browser. A 10-minute clip takes around 20 to 40 seconds to encode depending on the machine. Progress bar is honest.
- WAV files are lossless and large. A 10-minute stereo track at 48 kHz is roughly 110 MB.
- Mute mode re-renders the video as WebM (VP9 on Chrome / Edge, VP8 on Firefox). The audio track is dropped entirely. Wall-clock render time roughly equals source duration.
- Very long clips (multi-hour) can exhaust browser memory when extracting, since decoding holds the full uncompressed audio in RAM. Chunk long files first if your machine struggles.

Can I extract audio from a YouTube video?
Not directly. Save the YouTube clip with a downloader first, then drop the file into Audio Forge.
What’s the difference between Extract and Mute mode?
Extract gives you an audio file (MP3 or WAV) and discards the video. Mute gives you back the video, re-encoded, with the audio track removed. Pick the one that matches what you want to keep.
Why would I want to mute a video?
The most common reasons are removing a copyrighted soundtrack before uploading, stripping ambient noise before adding a clean voiceover, or making a silent loop for a portfolio or product page.
MP3 or WAV — which should I pick?
MP3 if you want a small, universal file (192 kbps is roughly 1.4 MB per minute). WAV if you want lossless audio for further editing (about 10 MB per minute at 48 kHz stereo).
What input formats can I extract from?
Anything your browser can decode: mp4, webm, mov, m4v, mkv, m4a, mp3, wav, ogg, flac. Chrome and Edge decode the broadest set.
