GIF Forge is a free online video-to-GIF maker. Drop a video, trim the in and out points, pick a playback fps and a palette, and render a clean GIF. The signature feature: a frame-skip knob that drops 1 in N source frames so the output is shorter without the action looking fast-forwarded. Keep every 2nd frame and the GIF is half as long, with each kept frame still playing for its normal duration.
Every other free video-to-GIF tool either speeds the clip up (the obvious shortcut) or trims the duration. Sometimes you want the whole arc of the clip but a shorter result. Frame skip is the missing knob.

- 03Pick an output fps. Lower fps = smaller file but choppier motion.
- 04Pick a frame-skip ratio. Keep every 2nd = half-length GIF, same per-frame timing as the original.
- 05Pick a resolution scale and a quality preset.
- 06Click Render GIF. Wall-clock render time roughly equals the trim length divided by skip.
- 07Download. Saves as <source>.gif.
- GIF file size scales with frame count, color count, and resolution. Cutting any of those is the right move when the output gets too big.
- Frame skip is not the same as speeding up. With skip = 2, half the source frames are dropped but each surviving frame still plays for the normal 1 / fps duration. The result is shorter and looks "jumpy" rather than "fast."
- Quality maps to palette size and dither. Low is 64 colors no dither, Med is 128 colors with dither, High is 256 colors with dither. Dither smooths color gradients at a small file size cost.
- Render runs frame by frame in your browser, so longer clips and higher resolutions take measurable time. The progress bar is honest and there's a cancel button.

What is frame skip, and how is it different from speeding up?
Frame skip drops 1 in N source frames so the resulting GIF is shorter without each frame playing faster. Speed-up makes every frame play in less time. With skip = 2 you get half-length output where motion looks 'jumpy' but normal-paced. With 2× speed you get half-length output where everyone looks like they’re running.
Can I trim a section before converting?
Yes. Drag the In and Out sliders below the player to mark the section you want, or scrub the video and use Set from playhead. Only the trimmed portion gets converted.
Why is my GIF so big?
GIF file size scales with frame count, color count, and resolution. The fastest shrink lever is resolution (50% scale = roughly 1/4 the size). Next is fps. Then quality (palette size). Then frame skip if you can afford a shorter result.
What does dither do?
Smooths color gradients so banding looks less obvious. Used on Med and High quality. Adds a small file size cost. Low quality skips dither entirely for the smallest output.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Mobile Chrome and Safari both render, though longer or higher-resolution renders may take longer than on a laptop.
Does it upload my video?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The video is decoded by the browser, frames are quantized and encoded with a JavaScript GIF encoder, and you download the result.
