Icon Forge is a free favicon generator. Drop in one source image and get a ready-to-ship icon kit: a multi-resolution favicon.ico, every PNG size browsers ask for (16, 32, 48, 64, 96), the Apple touch icon (180), Android Chrome PNGs (192 and 512), a maskable variant for Android adaptive icons, two Microsoft tiles, a PWA manifest, and a paste-into-head HTML snippet. Light and dark background variants are generated in one pass.
Every site needs a favicon kit. The existing free generators are bloated with display ads, email walls, and 'sign in to download' patterns. None of that is necessary. Icon Forge runs the whole job in your browser, packages everything into a single ZIP, and hands it back. Your image never leaves your machine.
- 01Drop an image (png, jpg, webp, or svg). A 512×512 square source gives the best output.
- 02Type your site name and short name. They go into the PWA manifest.
- 03Pick a light background color (and optionally a dark one for the dark variant). Theme color drives the manifest and MS tile.
- 04Toggle rounded corners on if you want the iOS-style 22% radius. Adjust maskable safe-area padding (default 20%).
- 05Click Generate icon kit. A ZIP is built in your browser.
- 06Download. Unzip the kit at your site root, paste the snippet from README-paste-into-head.html into your <head>.
- Non-square inputs are auto-letterboxed onto a square canvas filled with the chosen background color. Square sources need no adjustment.
- favicon.ico is a multi-resolution container with 16, 32, and 48 PNGs bundled together. Modern browsers read PNG-based ICO without issue.
- Maskable icons get a configurable safe-area padding (default 20%) so Android adaptive-icon shapes don't clip the logo. The slider is one of the controls.
- The dark variant is provided in a separate dark/ folder. Most browsers do not theme-switch favicons automatically; the dark kit is for manual deploys or hosts that maintain two themed builds.

What source image should I use?
A square PNG, JPG, WebP, or SVG at 512×512 or larger is ideal. SVG passes through to the kit as favicon.svg in addition to being rasterized for every other variant. Smaller or non-square sources still work — non-square inputs are auto-letterboxed.
What's inside the ZIP?
A multi-resolution favicon.ico (16+32+48 bundled). PNG favicons at 16, 32, 48, 64, 96. Apple touch icon at 180. Android Chrome at 192 and 512. A maskable 512 for Android adaptive icons. Two Microsoft tiles (150 and 310) with a browserconfig.xml. A PWA site.webmanifest. And README-paste-into-head.html with the exact <link> tags to paste into your <head>.
Why a ZIP instead of individual file downloads?
Because there are 15+ files per variant and a ZIP keeps the folder structure tidy. Unzip at your site root and the file paths in the install snippet line up.
What's the dark variant for?
It's a parallel kit rendered against your dark background color. Most browsers don't theme-switch favicons, so the light kit is the default, but the dark variant is useful for manual deploys, themed builds, or hosting two parallel sites.
What's a maskable icon?
Android adaptive icons crop your logo into a circle, squircle, or other shape chosen by the OS. A maskable icon includes a safe-area margin so the OS crop doesn't slice your logo. Icon Forge defaults to 20% padding, configurable via the slider.
Do I need the .ico file in 2026?
Strictly no — modern browsers (IE11+) all support PNG favicons. But Windows Explorer tab grouping, some legacy intranets, and some link previewers still prefer .ico, so Icon Forge includes it.
Does my image get uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The canvas renders each size, fflate packs the ZIP, you download it. No server is involved.
Can I tweak after generating?
Yes. Adjust the controls and click Generate again to rebuild the ZIP with new settings.
