Matching a physical color to a vendor's code usually means eyeballing tiny swatches against a carpet or running to a paint store with a torn cushion. Phone cameras are good enough to sample a color, the math to find the nearest standardized code is well-understood, and there's no reason it should require an app install or signup. Swatch Forge does the whole thing in the browser tab.
- 01On your phone, tap Use camera and allow camera access. On desktop, drop a photo into the upload area.

- 03Tap Sample center (or tap anywhere on the live preview to sample at that point). On desktop, click the image where you want to sample.
- 04If the room lighting threw the sample off — too warm under tungsten, too blue at noon — nudge the Hue / Sat / Light sliders to correct.
- 05Read off the matches. Pantone-like, RAL Classic, and CSS named. The percent figure is how close the match is (100% = perfect).
- 06Click any code to copy to clipboard. Use it when ordering curtains, paint, thread, embroidery floss, or anything sold by color code.
- Phone cameras adjust white balance automatically. For best accuracy, sample under the same lighting you'll see the final product under (daylight is most predictable).
- Pantone-like matches are community-compiled approximations across the wheel, not licensed Pantone color identifiers. Use them as a starting point and confirm with a physical chip when the dollar value is high.

How do I find the Pantone color of a carpet or fabric?
Open Swatch Forge on your phone, tap Use camera, allow access, point the back camera at the carpet or fabric, then tap Sample center. The nearest Pantone-like matches show up with their approximate codes. If the lighting is off, use the Hue / Sat / Light sliders to nudge the color toward how it really looks.
Are these official Pantone color codes?
No — they're community-compiled approximations sampled across the Pantone Solid Coated wheel. Use them as a starting point. If you're spending real money on a custom-color order, confirm with a physical Pantone chip or have the vendor verify the code.
What's RAL Classic?
The European industrial paint and textile color standard. ~213 codes (RAL 1000 through RAL 9023). Widely used by curtain, fabric, and paint manufacturers in Europe. Often the right answer when ordering household goods.
Can I sample a color from a photo on my desktop?
Yes. Drop or upload an image, then click anywhere on it to sample that pixel. Same matching engine.
Why is the matched color different from what I see?
Phone cameras and screens both lie about color. Cameras auto-white-balance, screens are tinted, and your room lighting shifts the sample. Use the Hue / Sat / Light sliders to drag the picked color toward what your eye actually sees in the room. Sample under daylight whenever you can.
Where does my photo or camera stream go?
Nowhere. The camera stream is captured in your browser tab. Uploaded photos are loaded from a local blob URL. No server, no account, no upload.
What's HSL? What's CMYK?
HSL is Hue / Saturation / Lightness — the model the adjust sliders use. CMYK is Cyan / Magenta / Yellow / Black — useful if you're going to print the color (a printer expects those numbers, not RGB).
